1939 Baseball Centennial Stamps Original Border Artwork

Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $120

The 1939 Baseball Centennial, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the "birth" of baseball, was a yearlong celebration highlighted by the dedication of the Baseball Hall of Fame on June 12th. Naturally, a number of souvenir items commemorating the game's anniversary were produced and sold that year, including a set of twenty-five specially produced Centennial of Baseball Stamps. The set was produced by Emery .A. Parichy, who in the 1930s had started his own baseball museum in Illinois, the Forrest Park Baseball Museum, which predated the Hall of Fame and opened to the public in 1935. Stamps numbered 1-13, most of which were horizontal in design, pictured famous baseball pioneers or illustrations concerning the game's early history. Stamps numbered 14-25, which were vertical in design, pictured portraits of many of the game's greatest players, including Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson. Offered here is the original border artwork for both the horizontal and vertical stamp designs. Both ink on board artworks are nearly identical in design, with the exception of their orientation. The texts along the top and border bottom borders read, respectively, "1839 Centennial of Baseball 1939" and "Commemorative Poster Stamps." Both the left and right borders feature illustrations of baseball equipment, including gloves, bats, balls, and catcher's gear. The artist's name, "G. Melikov," is written in pencil on the reverse of the horizontal artwork, along with a number of editorial notations. A small editorial pencil notation appears on the front of the vertical artwork. Included with the two original artworks is a printed preproduction sheet for the vertical design that includes the interior artwork, consisting of a plaque, two bats, and floral accents (the decorative vignettes and the illustrations of players were done by another artist). The original vertical artwork (6.125 x 8.75 inches) remains in Excellent condition. The original horizontal artwork (9 x 6.25 inches) displays adhesive residue on the front, as well as small areas of surface-paper loss, some of which affects the text along the base. In Good to Very Good condition. The preproduction sheet (6.25 x 8.5 inches) displays adhesive residue within the plaque area, as well as an approximate 1 x .5 inch area of paper loss in the upper right corner (Gd). Total: 3 items (2 border artworks and preproduction sheet). Reserve $100. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $120
