Mario DeMarco Original Baseball Artwork Collection (9) Including Ruth, Wagner, and Two Used in the Production of the 1950 Callahan Card Set
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,200
Collection of nine original baseball artworks by Mario DeMarco, highlighted by two original artworks used in the production of the classic 1950 Callahan Hall of Fame card set. All of the artworks are on bristol and were created utilizing DeMarco's painstakingly slow trademark "dot method" of drawing, with each artwork consisting of literally thousands of small dots. Each of the artworks is signed by DeMarco in black ink and three also feature his proprietary stamp on the reverse. The two artworks offered here that were used in the 1950 Callahan set are those of Bill Klem (11.5 x 16 inches) and Ed Barrow (11.5 x 16 inches). The remaining artworks (each of which may or may not have been published; we hope readers will provide information if these were published somewhere, which we will post online) are those of Babe Ruth (7.75 x 11 inches; slight trim to the left border), Honus Wagner (8.75 x 11 inches), Connie Mack (9 x 11.25 inches), Warren Spahn (11 x 15.5 inches; slightly trimmed along all four borders), Joe McCarthy (as a member of the Red Sox; 11.5 x 16 inches), Eddie Stanky (12 x 15.5 inches), and Bill Klem (different image than that used in the Callahan set; 11.75 x 16 inches). All of the artworks have been matted, by means of tape on the reverse, to slightly larger dimensions. Total: 9 artworks. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500+. SOLD FOR $1,200
