Richard Nixon presidential pen issued at the signing of a May 14, 1973, bill authorizing the production of the Presidential Citizens Medal, which was to be awarded to distinguished Americans for their service. Fittingly, the first Presidential Citizens Medal produced honored baseball star Roberto Clemente for his "outstanding athletic, civic, charitable, and humanitarian contributions." Clemente had died tragically in a plane crash just five months earlier, on December 30, 1972, while flying relief supplies to Nicaraguan earthquake victims. Nixon signed the bill authorizing the production of the medal at a special ceremony, held at the White House, attended by Clemente's widow and other dignitaries.
