1887 N693 Kalamazoo Bats Boston B.B.C. Team Card Including "King" Kelly and Radbourn
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $5,700
Graded VG 3 (MC) by PSA (submitted by REA). The Boston Base Ball Club from the extremely rare 1887 Kalamazoo Bats series of team cards. There are only six team cards in the set, and Boston is one of the high-profile keys to the set. The Boston Club was one of the powerhouses of the era, highlighted by Hall of Famers Mike "King" Kelly and "Old Hoss" Radbourn. The contrast on this example is superb. This is an extremely attractive card, with extraordinary detail, from the elaborate stadium-fence background, to the buttons on the uniforms, down to even the design elements of the legs of the chairs on which the players are sitting. The card is bright and crisp, with two tiny surface chips on the top edge, and light wear on the corners. There is a factory miscut along the top, which is responsible for the card being qualified by PSA. The blank reverse has three light surface wrinkles, a light stain, and a pencil erasure mark in the upper right corner when held horizontally as intended (appears to be an old price removed; it was not uncommon back in the day for people to write prices on the back of trade cards and postcards). This is an exceptionally attractive Kalamazoo Bats team card example and one of the nineteenth century's most striking and popular team cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,700
