Extraordinary High-Grade 1956 Elvis Presley Wallet and Purse Collection (19)
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $4,200
Rare collection of five Elvis Presley purses and thirteen wallets merchandised by Elvis Presley Enterprises in 1956. What makes this collection so extraordinary, is that all of the items in this collection, aside from their scarcity, are in spectacular Near Mint to Mint condition, looking much like they did when originally purchased some sixty years ago. The majority of the pieces feature an image of Elvis singing and holding a guitar (which was the main illustration of "The King" used during the 1950s by Elvis Presley Enterprises), but a number of different design variations are featured here. All of the purses and wallets are stamped "© 56 Elvis Presley Enterprises All Rights Reserved" on the reverse. The two rarest pieces in the this collection are the two large-format clutch purses (10 x 5 inches), one in red and one in blue, both of which feature a zippered interior pocket. Three smaller purses (8 x 4 inches), with a number of interior pockets, are also included, one each in red, blue, and ivory. The thirteen wallets are all approximately 4.25 x 3.5 inches and vary with regard to cover illustration, interior design, and clasp. The most notable of the wallets is one of the four featuring an image of Elvis singing against the backdrop of a large record. One of the two blue examples of that wallet features an embossed image of Elvis on the front, which is the first example we have ever seen, making it one of the rarest variations within the field. Three of the wallets feature a circular portrait image of Elvis as the centerpiece of the cover illustration. This collection took our consignor decades to assemble in this condition and represents both the largest and finest such collection of Elvis purses and wallets we have ever seen offered at auction. Also included is one other wallet (4.5 x 3.75 inches; manufacturer unknown), crafted in dark, brown leather, that features "Elvis/The King" in embossed lettering on the front. The reverse displays an embossed portrait illustration of Elvis surrounded by illustrations of four guitars (Ex-Mt). Total: 19 items (5 purses and 13 wallets issued by Elvis Presley Enterprises in 1956, and one additional Elvis wallet).
