1980-2001 Perez-Steele Hall of Fame Postcard Autographed Set (84 of 104 Possible Signed)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,400
This near-complete set of Perez-Steele Hall of Fame postcards is comprised of 260 cards (missing only the fifteen checklist cards) and features eighty-four signed player cards, plus three signed non-ballplayer cards ("D," "E," and "F"), including the George Bush presidential card. Perez-Steele Hall of Fame postcards, which are universally recognized as one of the most classic issues ever produced for autograph collectors, were originally issued in fifteen individual series between 1980 and 2001. With the exception of seven cards (featuring Hall of Fame officials, Perez-Steele Gallery executives, and other non-ballplayers) only Baseball Hall of Fame members are included in the set. Each card was limited to a print run of 10,000 and every card is individually numbered on the reverse. Of the 275 cards in the set, only 104 could possibly have been signed by Hall of Fame players (the balance of the players passed away prior to the date of publication). The offered collection features eighty-four signed Hall of Fame player cards. Although the offered set is complete with the exception of the fifteen checklist cards, it has been assembled from cards of variously numbered sets (i.e., 09634/10,000, 01602/10,000, 07860/10,000, etc.).
Unless otherwise noted, each signature has been scripted on the front in either blue or black Sharpie and grades "9" or "10." Organized by series, the following are the eighty-four Hall of Fame player-signed cards in this collection: Second Series: Hubbell, Gehringer; Third Series: Dickey (black ink), Terry, DiMaggio, Lyons, Greenberg (grading "4"), Feller, and Roush; Fourth Series: Appling, T. Williams, Musial, and Boudreau: Fifth Series: Berra, Gomez, Koufax, Leonard (grading "7/8"), Wynn, Irvin, Spahn, Bell, Conlan, Ford, Mantle, and J. Johnson: Sixth Series: Kiner, Lemon, Roberts, Banks, Lopez, Sewell, Mathews, Mays, Kaline, Snider, Gibson, and Mize; Seventh Series: Aaron, Chandler, F. Robinson, Kell, B. Robinson, and Marichal; Eighth Series: Aparicio, Drysdale, Ferrell, Killebrew, Reese, Brock, Slaughter, and Wilhelm; Ninth Series: Doerr, McCovey, Dandridge, Hunter, and B. Williams; Tenth Series: Stargell, Barlick, Bench, Schoendienst, and Yastrzemski; Eleventh Series: Morgan, Palmer, Carew, Jenkins, and Perry; Twelfth Series: Fingers, Newhouser, Seaver, Jackson, Rizzuto, and Carlton; Thirteenth Series: Schmidt, Bunning, and Weaver; Fourteenth Series: Niekro, Doby, MacPhail, Sutton, and Cepeda; Fifteenth Series: Anderson, Fisk, Perez, and Mazeroski. Additionally, the following three non-ballplayer cards have been signed on the front in blue Sharpie (grading "10") by each of the respective individuals pictured: card "D" (Ed Stack), card "E" (Frank Steele, Peggy Steele, and Dick Perez), and card "F" (President George W. Bush and Ed Stack). All of the cards are in Near Mint condition overall, with the exception of Greenberg and Dickey (Vg). Total: 260 cards (87 signed: 84 Hall of Fame player cards and 3 non-ballplayer cards). Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $3,000+. SOLD FOR $2,400
