1925 Walter Johnson Day Panorama

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,200

Panoromic photo capturing the ceremony at Walter Johnson Day held at Griffith Stadium on June 18, 1925. The ceremony pictured here is fully documented in Henry Thomas' definitive biography, Walter Johnson Baseball's Big Train (Phenom Press, Washington, D.C., 1995). Thomas writes: "With his 3-0 shutout of the Browns on June 16, Johnson became the first pitcher in the league to win 10 games. Two days later he was presented with the Most Valuable Player Award for 1924. Players from the Nationals and St. Louis Browns formed an aisle of honor through which a smiling Johnson walked to accept the ornate scroll from President Coolidge, who had interrupted preparations for his summer vacation to do the honors. " This photo pictures Johnson holding his 1924 MVP Award, with the Washington and St. Louis players lined up on either side of him. President Coolidge is clearly visible sitting in the stands behind Johnson. This is the first example of this panorama we have ever offered and we cannot recall having seen another. The white-letter caption along the base reads "Johnson Day, Washington, D.C/June 18, 1925." The photographer's credit, "Schutz Studios," appears in the lower right corner. A second credit, belonging to "Capital and Glogau/Photographers, Washington, D.C," is affixed to the photo just to the right of the Schutz credit. It is important to note that the Capitol and Glogau credit label reads "Reorder from Historical Print Division." Given that label, it appears that this panorama was printed sometime after the event (we believe the Glogau studio opened in the 1930s). While it is clearly old, probably dating from either the 1930s or 1940s, we do not believe it is an original print from 1925. The photo (38 x 9 inches) displays a few moderate tears, including a three-inch vertical tear that affects Johnson's left leg, minor creasing, and two small areas of white staining in the lower left corner. In Very Good condition overall. Framed to total dimensions of 39.5 x 10 inches. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,200
