1910-1911 M116 Sporting Life Collection (125) Including 42 PSA- and SGC-Graded Cards
Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $4,800
Presented is an outstanding collection of 125 different cards from the classic M116 Sporting Life set, highlighted by Hall of Famers Chief Bender, Miller Huggins, and Hugh Jennings, as well as nine desirable blue background variations. Sporting Life was a major competitor of the Sporting News in the early part of the twentieth century. The Sporting Life set was issued in 24 series of 12 cards each, sold by mail for four cents per series. M116s are one of the most significant and substantial issues of the era, and are considerably scarcer than their tobacco-card counterparts. The condition of this collection is 8% Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, 31% Ex, 21% Vg-Ex, 14% Vg, and 26% lesser. Forty-two cards are professionally graded by PSA or SGC (except for two GAI). M116s are unnumbered, so in the following condition composite, identifying card numbers are referenced from the numbers provided by the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist. PSA Grading Composite: NM+ 7.5 (1 card): #261a (SGC NM+ 86). NM 7 (1 card): #64. EX-MT 6 (4 cards): #92, 160, 231, and 273a. EX+ 5.5 (3 cards): #130a (SGC EX+ 70, 148a (SGC EX+ 70), and 234 (SGC EX+ 70). EX 5 (13 cards): #20b Bender/pastel (HOF, SGC EX 60), 35 (SGC EX 60), 50 (SGC EX 60), 63, 76b, 102a (SGC EX 60), 134, 139, 189a (SGC EX 60), 222a (SGC EX 60), 227 (SGC EX 60), 232a, and 249. VG-EX+ 4.5 (3 cards): #62b (SGC 55 VG/EX+), 193 (GAI VG-EX+ 4.5), and 200 (GAI VG-EX+). VG-EX 4 (10 cards): #2b, 56, 62a, 119 Huggins (HOF), 128a (SGC VG/EX 50), 147 (SGC VG/EX 50), 164, 235, 247, and 279. VG+ 3.5 (1 card): #126b Jennings (HOF, SGC VG+ 45). VG 3 (4 cards): #89 (SGC VG 40), 145, 156a, and 204. GOOD 2 (1 card): #230 (SGC GOOD 30). FAIR 1.5 (1 card): #94 (SGC FAIR 20). This is a very substantial group! While the cards in this collection span a number of different grades, it offers an outstanding foundation for the assembly of a complete set of this legendary issue, with the option of upgrading the lower-grade examples down the road. An extraordinary value, with many notable highlights! The SMR value for just the forty-two graded cards is $3,692. Total: 125 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,800
