1888 N28 Allen & Ginter Complete Set of Non-Baseball Players (40/50)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,440

Collection of forty different of the fifty cards comprising the N28 Allen & Ginter "World's Champions" set. N28 Allen & Ginter "World's Champions" is considered by many to be among the most beautiful of all nineteenth-century tobacco-card issues. The set features champions and stars of the day from a wide variety of sports. This collection represents a complete set of all forty non-baseball players in the N28 Allen & Ginter set. This set has been beautifully preserved in the family of a noncollector for decades. The balance of the set (the ten baseball players) is presented as its own lot elsewhere in this auction. Condition is 25% Vg-Ex to Ex (including one better), 45% Vg, and 30% Fr to Gd (including one lesser). Eighteen cards are professionally graded and encapsulated by SGC (submitted by REA). SGC Grading Composite: One EX/MT+ 82: Slosson (billiards). One EX+ 70: Frey (pool). Three EX 60: McLaughlin (wrestler), Schaefer (billiards), and Vignaux (billiards). One VG/EX+ 55: Mitchell (pugilist). Three VG+ 45: Carney (pugilist), Kilrain (pugilist), and Lannon (pugilist). Three VG 40: Dempsey (pugilist), McAuliffe (pugilist), and Weir (pugilist). Two GOOD+ 35: Hanlan (oarsmen) and Smith (pugilist). Two GOOD 30: Bubear (oarsmen) and Oakley (rifle shooter). Two FAIR 20: Buffalo Bill Cody (rifle shooter) and John L. Sullivan (pugilist). This is a magnificent collection of one of card collecting's most classic issues, with many of the lower-graded cards presenting far better than suggested by their assigned grades. The baseball players are often actually easier to find in this issue than the non-baseball players, precisely because they are so much more expensive. Here the work has been done, and all that is needed are the ten baseball players for completion (which are being offered separately in this auction). These forty cards represent a complete collection unto themselves or could be an ideal foundation for the assembly of a complete (including baseball) N28 Allen & Ginter set. This is an exceptionally sharp looking group. Total: 40 cards.
