1911 E94 George Close Candy Bob Bescher - Purple Background!

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $4,200

Graded EX 60 by SGC. Extremely attractive and high-grade example of Bob Bescher (Cincinnati Reds) from the E94 George Close Candy set featuring a striking purple background. E94 is one of the most desirable and highly collected of all 1910-era caramel-card sets. Although cards from this set are found with seven different background colors, collectors have come to appreciate purple backgrounds not only for their aesthetics but for their rarity (they are thought by many to be the scarcest). The offered card is stunning in every way! It presents with a crisp image, deep, rich color, very light touches of wear to the corners, and outstanding centering (very slightly to the bottom). The reverse is clean and features a checklist for the set. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. Of the three previously mentioned sets, E94s are the most difficult to find. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that refer to this company. Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in high grade. This is a tremendous purple-background sample card from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,200
