1889 N172 Old Judge Sam Thompson with Philadelphia

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $960

Graded VG 3 by PSA. 1889 N172 Old Judge example of Hall of Famer Sam Thompson (#456-4 pose) with the Philadelphia Nationals. This is a particularly fascinating card. Though the copyright date at the bottom of the card clearly reads "1887," this card was actually issued in 1889, after Thompson finished the 1888 season with Detroit and had signed with Philadelphia. There were not yet any photographs of Thompson in a Philadelphia uniform available, so Goodwin used a photo of Thompson from 1887 featuring him in his Detroit uniform and had the art department do its "magic" to substitute "Philadelphia" onto his uniform. The photo quality on the offered example is a little light, but the card presents well, with even wear at the corners (a bit more in the upper two). The blank reverse is mostly clean, with scattered foxing present. This is a very presentable N172 Old Judge example of "Big Sam" Thompson, worthy of any vintage card, Hall of Fame, or Old Judge collection. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $960
