1909-1913 M101-2 Sporting News Supplement - Autographed by Mordecai Brown - PSA/DNA and JSA

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,200

1909-1913 M101-2 Sporting News supplement featuring the rare signature of Hall of Fame pitcher Mordecai "three-finger" Brown. Brown has boldly inscribed the photo in black fountain pen along the base "To Dr. C. G. Steen/From/Mordecai Brown/A/Cub." The supplement has been encapsulated by Beckett/JSA, with the signature certified as "Authentic." It is also accompanied by a full LOA from PSA/DNA, which has also certified the signature as "Authentic." Any and all signature examples of Brown are relatively scarce today, but a signed image is especially desirable and rare. The fact that the 1909-1913 Sporting News supplements are also recognized as a card issue by the Standard Catalog makes this particular piece all the more noteworthy. Brown, who was one of the greatest pitchers of his era, played between the years 1904 and 1916 and he passed away in 1948, one year prior to his election to the Hall of Fame. Both of those factors have contributed to the rarity of his signature today. Needless to say, this is the only M101-2 signed by Brown we have ever seen and it is also only the third Mordecai Brown signed image we can recall having offered. The gentleman to whom this photo is inscribed, "Dr. C. G. Steen," was a collector of autographed M101-2 supplements during the 1940s and we have seen a number of other examples personalized to him, including a collection of three that are offered together as one lot elsewhere in this auction. The supplement (8 x 9.75 inches) displays very light fold lines, a small chip in the lower right corner, and a few minor creases. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from PSA/DNA and Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
