1902-1911 W600 Sporting Life James McGuire SGC NM 84 with Original Glassine Envelope

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,280

Graded NM 84 by SGC (submitted by REA). This is the ONLY example ever graded (at any level) by SGC! Magnificent high-grade example of Detroit catcher James McGuire from the very popular W600 Sporting Life cabinet-card set, issued in 1903. This is an extremely impressive high grade for any W600 Sporting Life cabinet card. To date, SGC has only graded eight cards (of all subjects) Near Mint with none higher out of 247 cards. Three variations of McGuire were issued in W600, and the offered example is the earliest of the three. Extremely bright, crisp, and clean, both front and back, with perfect centering and strong square corners with just a slight hint of wear at the extreme tips. This card really couldn't be much better. Its incredible condition is no accident: this card was consigned to REA in its original glassine envelope, which helped preserve it for more than one hundred years and accompanies the graded card. W600 Sporting Life cabinet cards were available only by mail. They are universally recognized as among the most substantial and highest-quality baseball-card sets ever issued. This is an outstanding ultra high-grade sample that would be a significant addition to any world-class W600 or prewar-card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,280
