1902-1911 W600 Sporting Life Daniel Shay with Original Glassine Envelope
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,200
Superb example of St. Louis Browns shortstop Daniel Shay from the very popular W600 Sporting Life cabinet-card set, issued in 1904. Extremely bright, crisp, and clean, both front and back, with perfect centering and strong corners. The card presents as Excellent or better at first glance, but close inspection reveals a tiny surface chip on the right border and light wrinkling on the blank reverse, which would ultimately cause the card to grade more modestly. The card's incredible display value is no accident: this card was consigned to REA in its original glassine envelope, which helped preserve it for more than one hundred years and accompanies the card. W600 Sporting Life cabinet cards were available only by mail. They are universally recognized as among the most substantial and highest-quality baseball-card sets ever issued. This is an outstanding sample that would be a significant addition to any W600 or prewar-card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,200
