1910 "Orange Borders" American League Champions Detroit Tigers with Ty Cobb - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $480

Graded EX 60 by SGC. This is the only example graded at this level with none higher! For many decades this rare set has been referred to by advanced collectors as "Orange Borders." In 1910 the "Geo. Davis Co., Inc." and the "P.R. Warren Co." of Massachusetts together issued this striking and extremely rare package-design set, with two cards featured on each box of "American Sports - Candy and Jewelry" (one on the front, and one on the back). Included among the featured cards were team cards of the previous year's league champions, the Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League and the Detroit Tigers of the American League as offered here. Bright, crisp, and clean, with strong corners and near-flawless orange borders. There is a slight uneven cut on the top and bottom edges as is often the case with these cards, which were designed to be hand-cut by youngsters. The blank reverse is entirely clean. This is a very attractive sample card from this elusive set. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $480
