1887 N172 Old Judge Cap Anson - Portrait

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,320

Very attractive 1887 N172 Old Judge portrait example of Cap Anson (pose #11-1). The offered example features a striking portrait of the nineteenth century's greatest star. The quality of the photograph is relatively strong for this card, which is sometimes very light on Anson Old Judges. (To put this in perspective, the photo quality on many N172 Ansons is so poor that many collectors don't even realize that Anson's tie has any dots.) The contrast is not as strong at the top of Anson's head, which is also a common problem with this card. Graded PR 1 by PSA due to evidence of album removal on the blank reverse (a flaw that "comes with the territory" when collecting Old Judges), the card has a few unobtrusive surface scratches and even wear at the corners. This is a very presentable N172 Cap Anson, one of the most important cards in the Old Judge set and one of the nineteenth century's most desirable and classic cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,320
