1907 PC805 Novelty Cutlery Postcard Ty Cobb

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $6,000

Graded VG 3 by PSA. Magnificent example of one of Ty Cobb's most stunning cards, from the very rare and highly regarded PC805 Novelty Cutlery postcard set, issued in 1907. This has always been one of our favorite Ty Cobb cards. It is interesting to note that the image of Cobb used on this card is the same image used on the PC796 sepia postcard series (an example of which is also offered in this auction). This is an extremely significant Ty Cobb rarity. It has never been mailed and has no writing on the postcard reverse. The front is beautiful, with a striking image of Cobb, virtually perfect centering, and light, even wear to the four corners. Bright and clean, both front and back. While we realize that the definition of what is a player's rookie card can sometimes be very controversial and can vary from collector to collector, the postcard issues of 1907 (including PC805 Novelty Cutlery) are certainly worthy of consideration for that claim, a distinction that is reasonably shared with several issues dating from Cobb's earliest days in the Majors. This is a stunning example of one of the most impressive, rarest, and earliest of all Ty Cobb cards. Dimensions: 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $6,000
