1955 Old Homestead Franks Des Moines Bruins Complete Set (21)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,500
Presented is a complete set of the very rare 1955 Old Homestead Franks minor-league cards issued regionally with packages of Old Homestead Franks and featuring twenty-one members of the Des Moines Bruins, the Class A Western League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. The EXTREME rarity of these cards is no doubt related to being issued with hot dogs, as well as their very limited and regional distribution. This set has been consigned directly by a gentleman in Iowa, who has had the set in his possession for decades (very likely since the year of issue!). Each card bears a black-and-white portrait of the player on front along with a facsimile signature and a solid black nameplate listing his name, position, and team. The reverse bears advertising for Old Homestead Franks. Condition of this complete set is Excellent overall (three lesser), with light touches of wear to the dark-colored corners and edges the only noticeable flaws. The 1955 Old Homestead Franks set is almost never seen as a complete set. This is only the second complete set that we have ever seen offered publicly. While we have found all cards from this set to be rare, some advanced collectors of regional and food issues have noted that the card of pitcher Bob Anderson is an extraordinary rarity within the set. One collector shared an anecdote on the popular Net54Baseball.com vintage-card message board recounting how upon acquiring an example for his set, he had the chance to show the card to Anderson himself, who had never even seen it before. This is an exceptionally attractive complete set of this rarely offered regional issue that will be a significant addition to even the most advanced collection. Total: 21 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,500
