1895 N566 Newsboy Tobacco Cabinet J. J. Doyle

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $960

Extremely attractive Newsboy cabinet card, number 178, of New York Giants infielder J. J. Doyle. Newsboy cabinet cards were issued by the National Tobacco Works of New York City to promote its Newsboy Tobacco brand. Newsboys are extremely rare and one of the very few baseball-card sets issued during the 1890s. The offered cabinet features a beautiful portrait photo with strong contrast. The mount is free of any significant edge wear, and the corners are strong (slight wear to the upper right). The blank reverse bears a handwritten list, in pencil, of Doyle's teams and years played, which would ultimately cause it to grade modestly if submitted for professional grading despite an overall strong Excellent appearance. This is an outstanding example from the desirable Newsboy cabinet-card series. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $960
