1910 "Orange Borders" Candy Box with Devlin and 1909 NL Champions with Wagner

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,920

Presented is a simply remarkable complete box of 1910 "Orange Borders" featuring Art Devlin of the New York Giants and the 1909 National League Champion Pittsburgh Pirates (with Honus Wagner). For many decades this rare set has been referred to by advanced collectors as "Orange Borders." In 1910 the "Geo. Davis Co., Inc." and the "P.R. Warren Co." of Massachusetts together issued this striking and extraordinarily rare package-design set, with two cards featured on each box of "American Sports - Candy and Jewelry" (one on the front and one on the back). An original candy box with cards intact is virtually unheard of, and this is, in fact, only the second example that we have ever had to offer! (The first, missing the top and bottom flaps and flattened for display, appeared as Lot #238 in REA's 2010 auction, realizing $3,819.) It is, BY FAR, the finest we have ever seen! The box is entirely complete and assembled. It presents in Excellent to Mint condition, with very minor wear at the corners and a few scattered age spots, which do not detract from overall exceptional display value and are mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy. It is interesting to note that despite the small size of the player images on the team card, most can be easily recognized, particularly Honus Wagner (second row, far right). "Orange Borders" have always been among the most elusive of all 1910-era baseball-card rarities. Everyone knows these were cut from boxes, but few have ever even seen exactly how they were issued. This box tells the story! This is an extremely attractive example of one of the rarest of all early baseball package-design boxes and featuring one of the key cards in the set. From the Dan Gantt Collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,920
