1910-1911 M116 Sporting Life Ty Cobb Pastel SGC NM 84

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,400

Graded NM 84 by SGC (submitted by REA). One of only four examples graded at this level by SGC, with only two examples graded slightly higher (both NM+ 86). Stunning ultra high-grade example of Hall of Famer Ty Cobb from the M116 Sporting Life set, one of the most popular of all 1910-era issues. (Fascinating provenance note: when our consignor purchased this card decades ago, it was still in its original envelope along with the rest of the M116 series it was sent with, as originally packaged by Sporting Life. It had never been touched since 1911, and has remained in the original Sporting Life envelope until now!) This is a gorgeous card! Bright and extremely clean, both front and back, with four sharp corners. The reverse is flawless, with the advertising for Sporting Life printed crisply and boldly in blue, and centered to the right. The centering on the front is just a hint towards the left border. This is an exceptionally strong high-grade example of one of Ty Cobb's most classic cards. The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grade is $4,250. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $5,400
