1888 E223 G & B Chewing Gum Mike Tiernan

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,700

Rare 1888 E223 G & B Chewing Gum sample of Mike Tiernan of the New York Giants. This outstanding E223 example of Tiernan is a photographic portrait variety, which is the most desirable type in the eyes of most collectors (G & Bs were also issued featuring woodcut "line drawing" illustrations). Their small size (1 x 2.25 inches) and the fact that G & Bs were issued with gum as opposed to tobacco make this set one of the most distinctive of all pre-1900 baseball-card issues. G & Bs are also one of the rarest of all nineteenth-century issues. Do not be fooled by the technical SGC grade on this gem! Graded POOR 10 by SGC, the offered example (as can easily be seen) presents as VG-EX to EX and is free of any creases, with even wear to the corners (slightly more to the bottom two). The photo contrast is superb. This is a very sharp-looking card! Downgraded from a much higher level only due to the ink stamping and a small area of paper loss on the reverse (common and very "forgivable" flaws when dealing with nineteenth-century cards). This is an extraordinary example from this highly regarded and very elusive set. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,700
