1888 N338-2 S. F. Hess Ed Crane
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $6,600
Graded FAIR 20 by SGC (submitted by REA). Do not be fooled by the technical SGC grade on this gem! We grade this card EX-MT with a hint of paper loss and glue residue on reverse from album removal. Extremely rare and very sharp-looking sample card of Ed Crane from the S. F. Hess tobacco set, one of the most elusive of all pre-1900 card issues. The S. F. Hess series features primarily New York Giants players. Of the twenty-three subjects known to date, sixteen are members of the Giants, champions of the National League in 1888 and 1889. The offered example is only one of three cards of Crane graded by SGC to date (the others grade VG 40 and FAIR 20; we would not be surprised if this was by far the most impressive of all three). The card displays as EX-MT from the front, with exceptionally strong photo contrast, four square corners, and no creases. The blank reverse displays very faint glue residue and slight surface paper loss, which account for the modest assigned grade despite a far superior appearance. A top-quality example from one of the nineteenth century's rarest baseball-card sets. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $6,600
