1916 M101-5 Sporting News #23 Forrest Cady - Extraordinary Rarity! (3)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $720

The M101-4 and M101-5 Sporting News sets are traditionally thought of as being pretty straightforward. There are some incredibly rare advertising back varieties, and these are extremely popular with collectors, but the fronts are generally considered to be of a similar scarcity in the two sets. There are generally no rare cards or pose variations - WITH SEVERAL NOTABLE EXCEPTIONS. For reasons unknown, three of the numbered cards in the M101-5 series (#12, 23, and 186) are known to feature two completely different players and poses. These extreme rarities are referred to in the M101-4/5 checklists as "short prints." Presented here is a fascinating trio of cards depicting Forrest Cady of the Boston Red Sox, one of the extreme rarities from the M101-5 series. Card #23 is almost never Forrest Cady; it is almost always Mordecai Brown. When it is Forrest Cady, he can be found both with and without a card number underneath his image. He can also be found as #25 in the M101-4 set (the other two extreme rarities, Bobby Wallace and Beals Becker, simply do not appear in the M101-4 set at all). This lot consists of all three possibilities for Cady outlined above. 1) M101-5 Blank Back #23 Forrest Cady: SGC Authentic, due to an irregular cut on at least one edge and part of top border missing; Vg-Ex otherwise. 2) M101-5 Blank Back Forrest Cady (no number): SGC GOOD+ 35. Very presentable, with even wear to the corners and light discoloration on the blank reverse. 3) M101-4 Standard Biscuit #25 Forrest Cady: SGC FAIR 20. Modest-grade example, with even rounding to the corners and a horizontal crease in the top third of card. Bold and clean reverse. The M101-5 extreme rarities are so rare they are virtually unknown even to many collectors of this set. This is only the second example of #23 Cady that we have ever offered (the first appeared as Lot #559 in REA's 2011 auction, where it was accompanied by the Becker and Wallace extreme rarities, realizing $35,320). This is a unique opportunity to acquire one of these virtually impossible-to-obtain M101-5 rarities along with two desirable parallels featuring Forrest Cady. Total: 3 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $720
