1916 M101-5 Sporting News #90 Walter Johnson
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,680
Graded VG 40 by SGC (submitted by REA). Hands-above-head pose of Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson from the M101-5 Sporting News series. The 1916 M101-5 set is one of the most highly regarded and comprehensive baseball-card sets of the era. The set is commonly referred to as issued by the Sporting News, but, as most collectors know, the set was actually issued by several different companies. Cards were printed with advertising for regional issuers as well as with blank backs. The offered card has a blank back. The M101-5 Sporting News set is universally recognized as one of the most significant of all prewar baseball-card issues. Bright and crisp, both front and back, with four square corners (a tiny surface tear in the upper left), outstanding image contrast, and centered slightly towards the left. This extremely attractive midgrade example would be a significant addition to any Walter Johnson or prewar Hall of Fame card collection.
