1907 Wolverine News Postcard Ty Cobb - Batting (Rookie) - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $9,000

Graded EX 60 by SGC (submitted by REA). This is the ONLY example graded at this level with none higher out of just eleven examples graded to date by PSA and SGC combined! Magnificent high-grade example of one of Ty Cobb's true rookie cards, from the highly regarded Wolverine News Detroit Tigers postcard set, issued in 1907. This card (along with the Dietsche postcard of Cobb issued in the same year) is considered by many collectors to be Ty Cobb's true rookie card. A number of other issues can also lay claim to that important distinction. While we realize that the definition of what is a player's rookie card can sometimes be very controversial and can vary from collector to collector, the postcard issues of 1907 are certainly worthy of consideration for that claim, a distinction that is reasonably shared with several issues dating from Cobb's earliest days in the Majors. This example has never been mailed. There is no writing on the postcard reverse. Light wear to the corners (slightly more in the lower left) and no creases or wrinkles. The Wolverine News Detroit Tigers postcard of Ty Cobb represents an outstanding and perhaps overlooked value compared to most other early Cobb cards, including those issued a couple of years later which are also widely recognized by many collectors as Cobb's rookie cards. This is an extremely attractive example of one of Cobb's most elusive early cards and one that qualifies as one of his true rookie cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++. SOLD FOR $9,000
