1887 N690 Kalamazoo Bats Fogarty and McGuire - Rare Advertisement Back!

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,400

Presented is an extremely rare N690 Kalamazoo Bats card featuring outfielder Jim Fogarty and catcher Deacon McGuire of the Philadelphia Quakers. This is one of the few double-player cards in the set, which gives it a fascinating visual appeal. This card also features outstanding background detail, including stadium seating, which is one of the many qualities for which the Kalamazoo Bats set is especially noted. Kalamazoo Bats cards are among the rarest of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues and feature perhaps the most stunning photography of any nineteenth-century set. This card is graded and encapsulated GOOD 30 by SGC. Do not be fooled by the modest assigned grade! As can easily be seen, this is a magnificent card with an extraordinary appearance. The image on this card is very bold, with flawless contrast and extraordinary detail. Outstanding centering, with a natural diamond cut and very faint touches of wear to the corners. A small surface scrape in the bottom right corner, which has resulted in a tiny area of missing paper, along with a faint horizontal crease visible only from the reverse, is responsible for the modest assigned grade. The reverse features a boldly printed advertising back (which is of special note as most Kalamazoo Bats cards have blank backs). It is entirely clean, with no paper loss or staining, both frequently encountered with nineteenth-century cards. An extraordinary sample card from this desirable issue with the added bonus of being both a rare double-player card and an advertising-back example! Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $2,400
