1887 N99 Gail & Ax "Battle Scenes" Near-Complete Set (20/25)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $540

Near-complete set of N99 Duke "Battle Scenes" cards consisting of twenty different (out of twenty-five). Missing #13, 15, 16, 17, and 22 for completion (identified by the numbers provided by the American Tobacco Cards Price Guide checklist). Issued with Duke's Cigarettes Honest Long Cut Tobacco, these scarce and very colorful nineteenth-century tobacco cards measure 2-1/2 by 4-1/8 inches and feature a striking colorful lithograph of a scene from the American Civil War with a caption on front. On the reverse is an explanation of the scene along with a checklist for the set and advertising for Honest Long Cut and Duke. All the cards offered here bear Navy Long Cut Cigarettes brand advertising. The entire near-complete set presents with bold colors and crisp images, but would technically grade modestly due to a small hole (likely from display) in the top border of all but two cards. Despite this flaw, almost all of the cards would grade Vg to Vg-Ex. Also included is one duplicate of Ram Albemarle. This is a very attractive yet still relatively affordable near-complete set of this quality issue popular among nonsport collectors for its design and historical subject matter. Total: 21 cards (20 different). Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $540
