1904 W601 Sporting Life New York Highlanders Team Composite: Chesbro, Griffith, and Keeler
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $960
1904 New York Highlanders W601 Sporting Life team composite featuring portrait images of nineteen team members, including manager Clarke Griffith, Jack Chesbro, Willie Keeler, Jack Powell, Al Orth, John Ganzel (misspelled "Ganzell"), Kid Elberfield, Wid Conroy, John Anderson, Deacon McGuire, and Patsy Dougherty. These Sporting Life team composites, printed on heavy enamel paper and issued by the Sporting Life newspaper, were available to fans either by individual purchase (for ten cents) or as a complete set in a bound volume. Jack Chesbro won 41 games for the New York Highlanders in 1904, but it was his wild pitch in the top of the ninth of a tied ball game against the first-place Boston Pilgrims on the final day of the season that allowed the winning run to score and ultimately cost New York the pennant. The piece (13 x 14 inches) displays two moderate horizontal folds, a few tiny edge tears, a tiny chip in the upper left corner, and a few small areas of light age toning. In Very Good condition overall. An exceptional early New York Highlanders display that is ideal for framing. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $960
