1911-1914 D304 Weber Bakery Charles "Chief" Bender SGC EX/NM 80 - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,200

Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC. This is the ONLY example graded at this level with none higher! Superb ultra high-grade example of Hall of Famer Charles "Chief" Bender from the extremely rare D304 Weber Bakery series. Issued by a bakery in the Buffalo, N.Y. area, these cards are known with five different back styles (Brunners, Butter Krust, General Baking Co., Weber Bakery, and Martens Bakery). In our experience, Weber Bakery is the most difficult of these five backs. To date, SGC has only graded twenty-two Weber Bakery examples of all subjects. Similar in design to tobacco and candy cards of the era, D304s measure slightly larger than T206s, at 1.75 x 2.5 inches, and while not “on the radar” of most collectors, are actually considerably rarer than most 1910-era “E” and “T” card issues. The fronts feature very attractive full-color illustrations, each of which is unique to this issue. In recent years collectors have shown a growing appreciation for the mystique of the rarest vintage card issues. D304s certainly fall into this category, and have always been appreciated but are rarely offered. This is a very sharp-looking card, with brilliant colors, flawless registration, virtually perfect centering, and four square corners. The reverse is flawless, with a bold advertisement centered slightly to the left. This is a very attractive high-grade example of one of Bender's most striking cards from this rare prewar food issue. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $4,200
