1911-1914 D304 Martens Bakery Frank Chance (No Team) SGC EX 60
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,000
Graded EX 60 by SGC. No team variation. Presented is an outstanding high-grade example of Hall of Famer Frank Chance from the D304 series, which features the extremely rare Martens Bakery advertising on its reverse. This example was one of the prizes of a now legendary six-card find of high-grade Martens Bakery cards which were found by our consignor literally tucked within the pages of a book from the 1914 era! All were sold at REA in 2006 and 2007 (this card was one of the two cards offered as Lot 229 in 2006, the other being the stunning SGC 92 example of Frank Baker which also appears in this auction; at the time the two sold for $20,880). The cards had been protected for decades from all elements, perfectly preserved within the confines of the book. This explains how this card happened to have survived in such extraordinary condition. This is one of Frank Chance’s rarest and most striking cards. Similar in design to tobacco and candy cards of the era, D304s measure slightly larger than T206s, at 1.75 x 2.5 inches, and are considerably rarer than most 1910-era "E" and "T" card issues, with the Martens Bakery back rarer still. The fronts feature very attractive full-color illustrations, each of which is unique to this issue. Aside from the centering being a bit low, this is a very sharp-looking card with brilliant colors, flawless registration, and four square corners. Centered slightly to the right on the back. This is an extremely attractive example of one of Chance's most striking cards from this extremely rare prewar food issue.
