1904 PT-1 Blue Label Cigar Makers Pin - Barney Wolfe
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $600
This extremely rare advertising pin is one of a series of sixteen pins issued by Blue Label Cigars to honor the 1903 Boston American first-ever World Series winners. Each pin in the set features a player portrait in black and white surrounded by advertising for Blue Label Cigars. Blue Label Cigar Makers pins are one of the most elusive and fascinating of all early baseball advertising pinback sets. To the best of our knowledge, no complete set has ever been assembled in modern times; and the only complete set in existence, which surfaced in the collecting world thirty years ago, was put together in the year of issue. This example, inexplicably, features pitcher Wilbert "Barney" Wolfe, who was a member of the New York Highlanders in 1903 and was traded to the Washington Senators mid-season in 1904. Wolfe never played with Boston during his brief four-year Major League career. His inclusion in this set is something of a mystery to us, but we are certain that additional research will provide an explanation! The pin is missing its original paper backing, and the reverse displays normal minor oxidation. EX. Diameter: 1.5 inches. From the Dan Gantt Collection.
