1904 PT-1 Blue Label Cigar Makers Pin - Cy Young
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,300
This extremely rare advertising pin is one of a series of sixteen pins issued by Blue Label Cigars to honor the 1903 Boston American first-ever World Series winners. Each pin in the set features a player portrait in black and white surrounded by advertising for Blue Label Cigars. Blue Label Cigar Makers pins are one of the most elusive and fascinating of all early baseball advertising pinback sets. To the best of our knowledge, no complete set has ever been assembled in modern times; and the only complete set in existence, which surfaced in the collecting world thirty years ago, was put together in the year of issue. This example features Hall of Fame pitcher Cy Young, making it the single most desirable pin from the set. Complete with its original paper backing (minor staining) that lists the name of the manufacturer, "A. R. Lopez, 17 Tremont St, Boston." Some minor foxing and surface scratching including a couple insignificant very fine cracks (mentioned for the sake of accuracy) but clearly an outstanding example of this supreme rarity with an overall Very Good or better appearance. One of the great prizes of all early baseball celluloids and the first Cy Young example we have ever seen. Diameter: 1.5 inches. From the Dan Gantt Collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,300
