1897 Cameo Pepsin Gum Pin Collection (7)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,700
Outstanding collection of seven extremely high-grade 1897 Cameo Pepsin Gum pins, including one example that we are not sure has been formally checklisted (Sullivan, Boston). Cameo Pepsin Gum pins, manufactured by Whitehead & Hoag, are among the rarest and most significant of all baseball pinbacks. Not only were they the first baseball pinback set, but they are also one of the few baseball issues of any kind dating from the late 1890s. All of the seven pins offered here are exceptional examples with crisp images and tremendous contrast! Unless otherwise noted each pin retains its original paper backing featuring an advertisement for "Pepsin Gum." The seven pins offered here are those of Powell (Cleveland; Ex-Mt), Sullivan (Boston; Ex), Donahue (Chicago; Ex with major staining to the paper backing on reverse), Hughey (Pittsburgh; cropping lines visible under "Pittsburg"; paper loss to paper backing on reverse; otherwise Ex), Hart (Chicago; Ex-Mt), Terry (Chicago; Ex-Mt), and Dammon (Cincinnati; paper backing on reverse advertises for Whitehead & Hoag; Ex, with adhesive residue on paper backing). Diameter: 1.25 inches. Total: 7 pins. From the Dan Gantt Collection. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $2,700
