1909 Hal Chase Colgan's Chips Advertising Display

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $20,400

Spectacular high-grade example of one of the most extraordinary and beautiful of all early 1900s baseball advertising displays: the 1909 Colgan's Chip poster featuring an E254 Colgan's Chip card of star first baseman Hal Chase. Colgan's Chip gum ("The Gum That's Round") was sold in a small, circular tin, which also contained a prize for youngsters in the form of a circular card picturing a major league player. This extremely large and colorful store display promotes the company's giveaway of a card in each tin by prominently featuring the card of Hal Chase. To the left of the card, a young girl is pictured about to chew a piece of Colgan's Chip gum. The text reads "Violet or Mint Colgan's Chips - The Gum That's Round - Ten Chips 5¢." An illustration of a Colgan's Chips tin, and pieces of the circular gum, complete the attractive design. This advertising display, which is triangular, was designed to fit in the corner of the window of the candy store, facing out to the streets for all passersby to see. The unique design and gorgeous colors make it one of the very best advertising display pieces in the hobby. (A superb advertising pamphlet, which marketed these displays to retailers, is also offered in this auction.) This is one of just four different advertising posters issued by the company, each of which pictured a different E254 Colgan's Chip card. This is the first example of the Hal Chase poster we have ever handled and cannot recall having seen another. Its rarity notwithstanding, the offered piece (19 x 25 x 31.75 inches) is further distinguished by its remarkable condition. The poster displays normal folds, as issued, as well as three prepunched holes (one in each corner) surrounded by a small square patch of pre-applied adhesive for ease in mounting to a window. Except for the slightest amount of wear along the fold lines, the poster remains in apparent Near Mint condition, looking just as it did when issued in 1909. Colgan's Chips posters are one of the earliest advertising signs associated with any set of cards and are therefore highly coveted by both card and advertising collectors. The offered example is extraordinary in all respects and one of the finest examples we have ever seen. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 26.5 x 32.75 x 42 inches. From the Dan Gantt Collection. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $20,400
