1889 Chicago Base Ball Club Advertising Currency
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $840
Classic baseball advertising currency featuring the 1889 Chicago Nationals. Such currencies were issued for several teams by various merchants over a period of several years. The front of this advertising piece features a portrait of Chicago Nationals President A. G. Spalding, a full-length batting pose of Cap Anson, and advertising for West Chester, Pennsylvania merchant "W. S. Hill - Watchmaker and Jeweler." The reverse depicts portraits of twelve members of the 1889 Chicago Nationals, including Anson, Van Haltren, Burns, Ryan, Pfeffer, Daily, Baldwin, and Williamson. These advertising currencies are very thin and easily damaged. As such, the condition of most surviving examples reflects their age and delicate nature. The offered currency (7.75 x 3.25 inches) is no exception, displaying four vertical folds and a few small edge tears. In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $840
