1924 Walter Johnson Souvenir Pin

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,040

Extremely rare and outstanding blue-and-white tone souvenir pinback featuring Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson. This is one of the great classics of baseball pins! The design features an illustration of a baseball, in the center of which is a photo of baseball's legendary "Big Train" warming up on the sidelines. The lettering around the perimeter reads "Pennant Winners 1924 Washington B. B. Club." Included, but not attached to the pin, are its three original silk ribbons (red, white, and blue, respectively). The white ribbon is lettered "Washington B. B. Club, Pennant Winners." This is one of only a few examples of this pin we have ever seen and the first we have handled. Given its rarity, we suspect that it may have only been distributed at Griffith Stadium during the 1924 World Series. Fittingly, Johnson was the winning pitcher in the Senators' twelve-inning 4-3 victory over the Giants in Game 7 held at Griffith Stadium. This is both an exceedingly scarce and attractive souvenir commemorating the only World Championship season in Johnson's illustrious career. 1.75 inches in diameter. Ex-Mt, with a few light surface marks and scattered oxidation on the reverse. The red ribbon displays a few moderate tears, otherwise they are in Excellent condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $2,040
