Pair of 1948 Montreal Royals Player Pins - Connors and Hopper
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $480
Pair of very scarce 1948 Montreal Royals player pins featuring, respectively, manager Clay Hopper and first baseman Chuck Connors. Hopper was also the manager of the Royals, the Brooklyn Dodgers top farm club, in 1946, which was the year Jackie Robinson broke organized baseball's long-standing color barrier. Hopper, a Southerner, had initially resisted Branch Rickey's plan for integration, but his treatment of Robinson that season has always been characterized as fair. Connors, of course, went on to greater fame in Hollywood, where he starred in the iconic Western television series, The Rifleman. The Chuck Connors pin is a particularly rare and desirable item (and one of the few items of any type issued from his professional baseball career). Both pins (1.25 inches in diameter) remain in Near Mint condition. Total: 2 pins. Reserve $200. Estimate $400++. SOLD FOR $480
