Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,920
Collection of forty-four different 1910-era tobacco cards, consisting of twenty-nine T205 Gold Borders and fifteen T206 White Borders. Included are six Hall of Famers, including Chief Bender, Eddie Collins, and Hugh Jennings, as well as several desirable advertising backs, including a T206 Brown Hindu. Most of the advertising backs are Piedmont or Sweet Caporal, but the collection does include five Polar Bear, three Hassan, and two American Beauty among the T205s and one Hindu and one Sovereign among the T206s. All cards are graded and encapsulated by SGC. This collection consists of the following: T205 Gold Border (29 cards): One VG+ 45: Herzog. Thirteen VG 40: Bender (HOF, PSA), Blackburne, E. Collins/closed mouth (HOF, PSA), Fletcher, Harmon/both ears, Harmon/left ear, Hoffman, Lord, Mullin, Payne, Reulbach, Shean/Rustlers (American Beauty, PSA), and Turner (PSA). Three GOOD 30: Barry, Evers (HOF, PSA), and O’Leary. Twelve Authentic: Clarke (HOF, American Beauty), Dooin, Groom, Jennings (HOF), Overall, Phelps, Scanlan, Schaefer, Smith, Wagner, Willett, and Wiltse/right ear. T206 White Border (15 cards): One EX 60: Schmidt/portrait. Three VG/EX+ 55: Konetchy/glove near ground, Quinn, and Randall. One VG/EX 50: Seymour/batting. Two VG+ 45: Hulswitt, and Seymour/portrait. Two VG 40: Criger, and Schlei/portrait. Two GOOD+ 35: Raymond and Schulte/front view (Hindu). Four Authentic: Frill, Konetchy/glove above head, Quillen, and Walsh (HOF). Each card is bright and crisp, with the sixteen cards graded Authentic presenting as Vg to Ex overall but displaying evidence of a slight trim. Tobacco cards in modest condition represent perhaps the best value among all vintage baseball cards. They don't cost a fortune but still capture the spirit of the history of the game and collecting. This is a small but powerful collection of tobacco cards from two of the 1910 era's most popular and classic sets. The equivalent SMR value for just twenty-eight of the cards (factoring in the eight half-grades at the lower whole-grade level and excluding the sixteen cards graded Authentic) is $1,999. Total: 44 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $1,920
