1939 R156 Gum, Inc. "True Spy Stories" Complete Set (24) Plus Wrapper

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $840

Offered is a complete set of this fascinating and very scarce 1930s nonsport-card issue which features scenes and text illustrating the history of espionage from the days of the American Civil War to World War II. "This is a True Spy Story. The names of some of the characters have been changed in order not to embarrass the government." This announcement appears at the top of the reverse of each of the twenty-four cards in Gum, Inc.'s thrilling "True Spy" story cards. Condition of this set is 60% Vg to Vg-Ex and 40% lesser. The fascinating subject matter and vivid artwork have always made this set a favorite with collectors. Accompanying this complete set is an original wax wrapper. It is in overall modest condition, with several flaws, including staining and small holes, present, but is a great rarity all by itself, and an ideal accompaniment to this seldom-seen set. This is a very attractive complete set, with most cards bright and clean, of this popular nonsport issue. Total 24 cards plus wrapper. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $840
