1913 National League Champion New York Giants Team Panorama with Mathewson, Thorpe, and McGraw
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $840
Panoramic photo of the National League Champion New York Giants taken at the Polo Grounds in 1913. The photo captures twenty-nine members of the club in a classic team pose, including manager John McGraw, Christy Mathewson, Jim Thorpe, Wilbert Robinson (coach), Rube Marquard, Heinie Groh, Fred Snodgrass, Fred Merkle, Chief Meyers, Jeff Tesreau, Larry Doyle, Art Fletcher, Buck Herzog, Red Murray, George Burns, Al Demaree, and Hooks Wiltse. The caption along the base reads "New York 'Giants' 1913." All of the players are identified in print directly below the caption. The photographer's copyright "1913 by Pach Bros. N. Y.," appears in the lower right corner. The Giants captured their third consecutive pennant in 1913, but, like the two previous years, they once again fell victim to their American League rivals in the World Series. 1913 also marked Jim Thorpe's first major league season. A gold-medal winner in the 1912 summer Olympics in Sweden, Thorpe returned home and began a professional baseball career that lasted six seasons. Thorpe appeared in just nineteen games with the Giants during his inaugural season, finishing the year with 1 home run, 2 RBI, and a .143 batting average. The photo (20.75 x 9 inches), which is printed on thick paper stock, displays a number of moderate tears, all of which have been repaired, as well as scattered staining throughout (many of the stains touch upon player images). In Good to Very Good condition overall. Matted and framed to total dimension of 26.5 x 14.5 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $840
