1906 W601 Sporting Life Philadelphia Athletics Team Composite: Bender, Plank, Mack, and Waddell
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $300
1906 Philadelphia Athletics W601 Sporting Life team composite featuring portrait images of nineteen team members, including manager Connie Mack, Eddie Plank, Rube Waddell, Chief Bender, Harry Davis, Danny Murphy, Jack Knight, Lave Cross, Socks Seybold, Danny Hoffman, and Topsy Hartsel (misspelled "Hartzel"). These Sporting Life team composites, printed on heavy enamel paper and issued by the Sporting Life newspaper, were available to fans either by individual purchase (for ten cents) or as a complete set in a bound volume. The team pictured here is essentially the same club that captured the 1905 American League pennant. As such, they are identified in print as "Champions for 1906." (It was common practice at that time for pennant-winning teams to be called "Champions" of their league the following year until they were dethroned.) The piece (12.5 x 13.5 inches) displays moderate-to-heavy staining in the margins and numerous edge tears. While technically in modest condition, It should be noted that most of the major flaws are in the border areas and can easily be matted out. If it were matted and framed, the piece would be closer to Excellent in terms of its overall appearance and would be more than suitable for display.
Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $300
