1893 "Carnival of Venice" Program with Cleveland Spiders Team Composite Including Cy Young!
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $600
Substantial twenty-four-page program for the 1893 "Carnival of Venice," which was a "Gigantic Outdoor Historical Spectacle" held at the Cable Park Amphitheatre in Cleveland, Ohio. Most collectors are probably wondering what this program has to do with baseball memorabilia, and so did we when our consignor gave it to us. However, on two separate inside pages are, respectively, the Cleveland Spiders home and away schedule for 1893 and, most important, a spectacular team composite photo of the club featuring portrait images of fifteen team members, including Cy Young, John Clarkson, Patsy Tebeau, Jesse Burkett, and Buck Ewing. This is the only example of this program we have ever seen, which is not surprising, since few, if any, baseball collectors would ever give it second notice given its subject matter. The program (6.25 x 9.25 inches) displays modest handling wear, including a few scattered areas of very light foxing, and remains in Excellent condition overall.
