1911 E94 George Close Candy Ty Cobb
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $13,200
Graded VG-EX+ 4.5 by PSA. This is the ONLY example graded at this level with just five higher! Presented is an extraordinary example of Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Ty Cobb from the E94 Close Candy series. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Mass. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that make reference to this company. This remarkable card presents much better than suggested by its assigned grade, sharing many characteristics with an example grading EX-MT or even better. The card features a flawless image of Cobb set against a blue background. Perfectly centered, with bright white borders and four strong corners showing light hints of wear. The reverse, which bears a checklist for the set, is perfectly clean. Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in high grade. This is a superb example of the legendary Ty Cobb from this extremely scarce and classic 1910-era candy issue. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $13,200
