1977 Topps Lee Richard Unissued Proof
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $3,600
Extremely rare unissued blank-back card featuring St. Louis Cardinals infielder Lee Richard from the 1977 Topps baseball set. While at first glance this appears to be just a slightly unusual blank back of an otherwise relatively common card, the offered card is of great significance in that it is a proof card that was ultimately dropped from production after Richard's release by the Cardinals in late 1976. Topps had images of Richard with the Cardinals in its image files and planned for him to be included in the 1977 set in the first run of proof sheets. When he was released by the team, Topps had to adjust accordingly, and ultimately replaced him (the same thing happened with cards of Jerry Grote, who was dropped from the set after the first proof run, and Danny Thompson, who was also removed from the set due to his tragic early passing in December 1976). This is the only 1977 Topps proof of Lee Richard that we have ever seen. It is extremely rare! There are very few unissued proof cards of this type from so early a date. This is an extremely unusual Topps rarity that would be very much at home in even the most advanced Topps or error-card collection. Hand-cut (by definition, as this card had to have been cut from a proof sheet), otherwise in Near Mint condition. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,600
