1914 Marsuma "Famous Golfers and Their Strokes" Complete Set (50): #2 PSA Set Registry!

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $12,000

Presented is one of the finest complete sets of 1914 Marsuma "Famous Golfers and Their Strokes" cards ever assembled. This is currently the number-two All-Time Finest set in the world on the PSA Registry! The overall GPA of 7.33 is extraordinary for this condition-sensitive set. Because of the gold-border design (similar to the T205 Gold Border baseball cards) the set is considered by many serious collectors as the single most difficult vintage golf-card set to complete in high grade. This is a gorgeous set, rarely offered in complete-set form, let alone in such extraordinary high grade. The 1914 Marsuma "Famous Golfers and Their Strokes" set is often overlooked by collectors simply because it does not include Bobby Jones or Walter Hagen. However, it does feature multiple cards of many legendary pioneers of the game, such as Harry Vardon, James Braid, J. H. Taylor, H. H. Hilton, and two rookie cards of Hall of Famer Walter Travis. Only eleven different golfers comprise the fifty-card set. The set includes one MINT 9, twenty-one NM-MT 8s, three NM+ 7.5, eighteen NM 7s, and seven EX-MT 6s. This is a very scarce and enormously significant set in extremely high grade. The PSA grades are as follows: One MINT 9: #46 Braid. Twenty-one NM-MT 8: #4 Braid, 6 Braid, 7 Braid, 8 Braid, 9 Braid, 12 Braid, 16, 17 Taylor, 24 Hilton, 25 Taylor, 32 Braid, 34 Vardon, 36 Vardon, 38 Travis RC, 39 Hilton, 41 Taylor, 44 Taylor, 45 Taylor, 48, 49 Travis RC, and 50 Hilton (last card in the set) . Three NM+ 7.5: #13, 22, and 26 Taylor. Eighteen NM 7: #3 Vardon, 5 Braid, 10 Braid, 14, 15, 18 Taylor, 19 Ball, 20 Ball, 21, 23 Hilton, 27 Taylor, 28 Taylor, 29 Taylor, 30 Taylor, 31 Braid, 33 Braid, 40 Taylor, and 47 Braid. Seven EX-MT 6: #1 Vardon, 2 Vardon, 11 Braid, 35 Vardon, 37, 42 Taylor, and 43 Taylor. Twenty-two of these cards are the highest-ever PSA-graded examples. Seven additional cards have only one example graded higher. The assembly of a set of this caliber is particularly extraordinary and would be a highlight in any advanced golf-card collection. Total: 50 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $12,000
