1914 T222 Fatima Cigarettes Walter Johnson
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,100
Graded VG 3 by PSA. Presented is Hall of Famer Walter Johnson's extremely rare 1914 T222 Fatima Cigarettes card. Johnson, along with the rookie card of Grover Alexander, is the key card to the set, and he is also one of fifteen short-printed cards, which make completing the set especially challenging. Issued in 1914 by the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company, the individual-player Fatima cards are among the most distinctive of all tobacco cards and are much rarer than the T200 Fatima team cards. The thin photographic stock and fragile glossy surface of these unusual real-photo-style cards make them especially susceptible to minor surface creases. The offered example is bright and clean, with outstanding contrast, four strong corners (more wear in the lower right), and centering to the top. A horizontal crease extends along the center of the card and causes us to grade this example more conservatively than PSA. This is an outstanding example from the condition-sensitive T222 set featuring one of the greatest pitchers ever to play the game, and it presents a tremendous opportunity to acquire this key T222 Fatima, which is one of prewar-card collecting's rarest Walter Johnson cards, worthy of even the most advanced collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,100
