1931 W517 Uncut Three-Card Strip Featuring Babe Ruth, Goose Goslin, and Mel Ott Plus Extremely Rare Original Box!
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,400
Outstanding original uncut strip of three cards from the 1931 W517 strip-card set, featuring Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Goose Goslin, and Mel Ott, plus an extremely rare original box designed to display these cards on candy-store counters in the 1930s. The last time we saw an original W517 box was on the cover of the February 1978 edition of The Trader Speaks, in which dealer Rex Coile documents an exciting find in Pennsylvania that, for the first time ever, turned up uncut strips of W517 cards and an original box. The find shed light on the method of issue for this set as W517 strips were displayed on the candy-store counter sticking out of the box labeled "Champion Draw." When a strip was purchased, youngsters would get to pick an uncut strip, and depending on the text at the top of the strip or the thin strip of color-coding on the reverse, kids could receive an extra prize of some kind. This is the first such box that we have ever offered, and we can't imagine that many have survived. Measuring approximately 3.5 x 2.25 x 6 inches, the box (Excellent overall, with very minor shelf wear along the joints) features a yellow label on the front, with instructions to draw a card out printed in red. For a one-cent entry, the buyer had the chance to win candy or a baseball, depending on the color coding on the bottom of the selected strip.
The three-card uncut strip, measuring 2-7/8 x 11-1/2 inches, features three individual cards that were intended to be cut apart into individual cards. The offered strip ideally features three Hall of Famers, with the key card, Babe Ruth, positioned in the middle! Surviving complete as-issued uncut strips are extremely rare (let alone one including Babe Ruth)! The strip has an overall Excellent or better display value, with only light wear at the corners (almost to be expected due to its size). The center Ruth card is in Near Mint condition. This is a tremendous pair of extremely rare items from the W517 series, offering a superb opportunity to acquire both an as-issued original uncut strip, highlighted by New York Yankees Hall of Famer Babe Ruth, and an original store-counter display box that illustrates exactly how these classic cards were offered and displayed at candy stores in 1931. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,400
