1936 S & S Game Sets with Original Boxes (104 cards) - Large and Small Box Versions!
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,080
Two complete 1936 S & S Game sets of fifty-two cards each (total 104 cards): 94% grade Nr/Mt or better, with 6% very slightly lesser. The S & S set features many stars and Hall of Famers, including Jimmy Foxx, Carl Hubbell, Mel Ott, Pie Traynor, Paul Waner, Bill Dickey, Luke Appling, Joe Cronin, Charlie Gehringer, Frankie Frisch, Joe Medwick, and many others. Both sets are accompanied by their original game boxes (each a different style) as issued. Both original boxes are rarely seen! The larger display box, measuring 10 x 5 x 1 inch, exhibits some general wear and a seam separation on one side, but is still complete and displays very nicely. The pegboard and seven pegs that accompany the box and card set are in Excellent condition and, like the box, are rarely found in any condition. The second set is accompanied by a smaller version of the game box, measuring approximately 5 x 4 x 1 inches, with some edge and corner wear but still overall in Vg-Ex condition, with pegboard. The cards from both sets all grade Nr/Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt with the exception of six cards grading lesser due to a tiny corner crease or surface wrinkle.
S & S Game cards may represent the best value of all cards issued in the 1930s. Where else can collectors get 1930s cards in Nr/Mt condition, including all the great stars of the era, without spending a fortune? Virtually all high-grade complete sets of S & S in the entire hobby originate from a single source - Bruce Yeko's "Wholesale Cards." Yeko was one of the hobby's first full-time vintage-card dealers, and in the early 1960s he somehow came upon a significant quantity of complete sets of 1936 S & S Game cards in near-perfect condition. For many years these sets were offered in "Wholesale Cards" fixed-price catalog for $19.95 per set. No one knows how many sets he originally had, but it was probably in the hundreds. They were available well into the early 1970s, before they finally ran out. None of the "Yeko sets" were accompanied by the original boxes as packaged and sold by S & S in stores in the 1930s. That is why, even though collectors are very familiar with S & S Game cards, few have seen or even heard of either of the two versions of the original S & S box, both of which are included in this lot. S & S Game card sets have always represented an outstanding value for collectors. There are no guarantees, but it is our guess that the tremendous value presented by these cards will help them to be an equally great investment in the future. Total: 104 cards representing two complete sets, with two original boxes (large and small versions). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $1,080
