Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $8,400

Presented is a spectacular ultra high-grade complete 1914 Polo Grounds game-card set consisting of all thirty different players within the set. The entire set is graded and encapsulated by PSA and consists of three GEM MINT 10s, twenty-six MINT 9s, and one NM-MT 8. It currently ranks second on the PSA Set Registry with a staggering 9.16 overall GPA. Produced by The Card Baseball Co., Inc., of Norfolk, Virginia, this rare game-card set is referred to as “The Polo Grounds” game because the back of each card features a green and white photograph of a game in action at the Polo Grounds. When issued, the game included a total of fifty-four cards representing thirty different players plus twenty-four duplicates. This set is complete at thirty different cards. Armed with the instructions, youngsters could use the cards to play an exciting game of indoor baseball. The fronts have a sepia player photo plus a baseball “play” to determine the result of the player’s action. All the great stars of the day, including Joe Jackson, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and an additional eleven Hall of Famers, are included in this set. PSA Grading Composite: Three GEM MINT 10: Mathewson (HOF), Meyers, and Wagner (HOF). Twenty-six MINT 9: Archer, Baker (HOF), Chance (HOF), Cheney, Cobb (HOF), Collins (HOF), Doyle, Fletcher, Hendrix, Jackson (Black Sox), Jennings (HOF), Lajoie (HOF), Lavender, Maisel, Maranville (HOF), Marquard (HOF), McGraw (HOF), McInnis, Murray, Plank (HOF), Russell, Schulte, Scott, Speaker (HOF), Walsh (HOF), and Wood. One NM-MT 8: Rucker. This is an extraordinary set, one of the finest complete Polo Grounds sets ever assembled, and by far the finest that we have ever offered. It would be a worthy addition to any world-class prewar-card collection or offer tremendous break value if desired. The SMR value for the complete set (factoring in the three GEM MINT 10s at the MINT 9 level since no value exists for the higher grade) is $13,105. Total: 30 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000+. SOLD FOR $8,400
